Survey chaining: skipping to questions, and toggling the visibility of questions

The survey chaining feature can be used to skip to a specific survey page, or toggle the visibility of a certain question, based on the answers to a survey question. Survey chaining applies to answers from three question types: multiple choice question (one answer), multiple question (many answers) and the dropdown list.

Chaining options can be accessed through the edit page for one of these question types. Under the answers section, you can access the chaining button to set up chaining for that particular answer. Different answers can have different chaining setups for the same question.

On the chaining setup, you can select either the skip to option, or the toggle visibility option.

Skip to

The skip to option can be used to skip to any other question, or other survey elements such as survey text. You can also use the skipping function to end the survey early; this can be done by submitting the users existing answers or ending the survey without submitting any of their answers.

When skipping to questions or survey elements, this will only occur if the survey element that is being skipped to, is on another page. Furthermore, the skip won't occur as soon as the user has selected the answer, it will occur once they have selected all of their answers for the particular page and pressed continue.

Toggle visibility

The visibility toggle can be used to make questions visible based on a users answer to a question. For example, if a user answers a multiple choice question about priority issue in their area, a location question could then appear so they can say where that particular issue occurred

Once you have set up the chaining to toggle the visibility, make sure that you go to the edit page for the question of which the visibility is being toggled. From there, make sure that the question is set to be invisible by default.

The visibility toggle will apply as soon as a user selects the necessary answer. If they change their answer, the necessary question will appear invisible again.
