Overview
After many years of our public community messaging software proving to be a great success, we were approached by a Police force looking for a means to communicate to members of their Police force, using a secure platform and with minimal downtime.
While this is something we had never done before, we knew it could be done as our current software already had most of the necessary capabilities to satisfy these requirements. We agreed to the task, and after some design, development and testing, our "Police Internal Messaging" solution was available.
How the system works
For those already familiar with how our community messaging system works, the Police Internal Messaging system is nearly identical , although a few things have been changed to fulfil the specific brief for Internal Messaging:
- A separate 'admin area' is used for managing your internal recipients, so this functionality is completely separated from the standard Alert system.
- Police officer data is separated from public member data - this ensures your messages will only ever reach the Police officers who are registered to your Internal Messaging system, and also ensures that only your administrators can see the Police officer data, too.
- Pin-protected registration to prevent members of the public signing up to the system (only people that are given the pin can access the registration).
- Messages can no longer be "propagated" (shared) on various websites, which also prevents them from appearing on public RSS feeds and ensures any of the internal messages are kept out of the public eye.
Sending a message using Internal Messaging
Sending a message to your Police officers is just as easy as it is on the community messaging system, if not easier. All of the current forces using our internal messaging system are using message templates which automatically fill in a quick message to the selected force roles. These can be changed at any time, and make messaging your Police even quicker and easier. As mentioned, Police officers can be assigned into groups (commonly placed into their designated "teams") so you can message entire teams/units instantly.
API automation
Finally, we also have an optional secure API connection, which enables you to add and remove hundreds of your Police Officers instantly and as frequently as required with a "joiners/leavers" type excel list. Keeping a messaging database such as this up-to-date manually can be a tricky and time-consuming task, so we advise any force that wants to save time with the administration of the system to buy this API connection.
